Construction
A waistband that gives is the least visible feature on a trouser and the one men notice first. Here is what is actually inside it.
Inside the band, hidden between the outer cloth and the lining, sits a length of elastic anchored at both ends. When your waist grows through the day, the elastic extends and the outer cloth slides with it. From the outside nothing shows, because the outer cloth is cut long enough to cover the full range.
This is why the feature is normally described as hidden. A visible elastic panel does the same job and announces itself. The hidden version keeps a plain band under a belt.
Most of the discomfort of a day in trousers happens in the first ten minutes of sitting, when the waistband is asked to take a couple of inches it does not have. A band that gives absorbs that quietly, and the trouser stops fighting you across the front.
It also takes the pressure off the closure. A waist that is not straining does not pull the fly open into a gap, which is the tell that a trouser is a size too small.
If you sit between two waist sizes, an expanding band lets you take the smaller one and let the band do the work. Without one, take the larger and hold it with a belt. That is the whole rule, and it is worth knowing before you order.
Check the tables to see which waists a style covers before you decide which way to round.
