What no iron really means on a trouser label

A no iron label is a claim about how the cloth recovers, not a claim that the trouser will never crumple. Knowing the difference saves an argument with your dryer.

Wrinkle resistance is about recovery, not immunity.
A permanent crease survives washing. A pressed crease does not.
The dryer and the hanger do more for the look than the iron.

The finish is doing the recovering, not the heat

Cotton wrinkles because the fibres inside the yarn shift and then set in the new position while the cloth is damp. A wrinkle resistant finish binds those fibres so they spring back towards where they started once the cloth is warm and moving. That is why the dryer matters more than the iron: the tumbling is what gives the fibres room to recover.

It also explains the failure most men run into. Trousers left folded at the bottom of a cold drum for an hour have nothing to recover with. The finish has not stopped working, it has simply been asked to work on a cold, still, folded garment.

A permanent crease is set, not pressed

The sharp line down the front of a dress trouser is normally the work of an iron and it goes away in the wash. A permanent crease is built into the leg while the cloth is being finished, so the line survives wash cycles that would flatten a pressed one.

What it will not do is move. If you want the crease somewhere else, or you want it gone, it is not going anywhere without a great deal of heat and some regret. Buy the crease you want to live with.

What to expect after a full day

By late afternoon a wrinkle resistant trouser will show soft folds behind the knee and across the lap. That is a garment that has been sat in, and no finish prevents it. The point of the finish is that those folds fall out overnight on a hanger instead of setting into creases that need pressing out.

Hang them up as soon as you take them off. It is the single habit that decides whether the finish looks like a feature or like marketing.
